Not sure if this was discussed before...my apologies if it was.
I just picked up a DVD today entitled, "Journey Greatest Hits DVD 1978-1997: Music Videos and Live Performances" (at Circuit City of all places!)
I'm a huge fan of Steve Smith (particularly his work with Journey) and have been wanting some vintage Journey video for a long time. It's not a whole concert, and there are no drum solos or extended drum shots, but it's still cool to watch. Lots of live footage and some music video/studio footage as well. (A few tunes feature Ansley Dunbar.) I recommend it to any fan of Journey during their hey day.
I know Steve has been criticized from time to time, but he was one BAD-ASS rock drummer in those days. He really played the shit out of that gig....that was one TIGHT band live. We talk about Vinnie playing with his middle finger in the air (which is very, very true), but I think that was a key ingredient in Steve's drumming with Journey. There was a certain feel in his playing that I really dig.
Best $12.99 I spent today!

You need to get Frontiers & Beyond-- hard to find and a bit expensive. I went on a Journey forum, did a thread on it, found some gal who loved Journey & asked her for it or a trade and she copied it for me. It is a 1983 documentary on the band--very good! Also, I have a Live in Japan DVD of the band. Production not as good as a US tour, but you get Smith in his Journey prime. He did kill this gig. Even if you just tuned in and said, "Oh, Journey's a good rock band and the drummer is just a rock drummer" on viewing this, you should think that this guy is really good. You can see it in his eyes, in his body language. The guy's great. No one in here in their right mind (and we've had a few lost minds lately) would criticize Steve for not being "par excellence" as a musician.

I have the Frontiers and Beyond DVD before Steve Perry told the band to stop selling it. The japan concert is great, I have an excellent copy of that one on DVD.

My favorite thing about that DVD are the occasional cool fills from Deen and Neil Schon's guitar playing.

I have a newer one with another singer who, oddly looks like Steve Perry a bit and has the same first name (Steve Augeri, I think), and Deen Castronovo drumming. I'm a fan of Deen's since I saw him and S.Smith do a drum set battle at a Sonor event at a NAMM about 10 years ago. It's interesting to hear another good player's take on the parts. I'd like to get a good DVD of them with Smith, but was afraid the footage would be disappointing.

The "Frontiers & Beyond" VHS used to actually be in the closest Blockbuster Video, here. Then, it was abruptly yanked. As I can see now, prob due to the reason Randy stated.
I had copied part of it to VHS back in the early-to-mid 90s sometime...at least the part addressing Smith & w his solo ...the part that starts w an exhilarated/astonished Schon watching Steve jamming on the armrest of an arena's dressing room couch & foot tapping on floor...it was since lost.
I recall it was a cool "blast from the [80s] past."
